A high quality curriculum is the foundation of our successes chalked over the years. We passionately believe that all aspects of learning are important – the study of academic subjects (literacy, numeracy, science and all the other areas) as well as personal and social learning (getting on with each other, communicating well, managing difficulties effectively, etc.) Our lessons are planned and taught in a stimulating environment in accordance with the Ghana Education Service standardized-based  curriculum requirements. All our lessons are carefully planned and delivered to stimulate creative learning opportunities and the application of core knowledge skills and competencies. We focus on seven core competencies which make our students: problem solvers, critical thinkers, creative innovators, global citizens, digital literates, skillful leaders and effective communicators.

In order to best support the specific learning needs of our students and enable them to gain the knowledge and skills they need to thrive, we have adopted an approach to learning, where our facilitators use a mixture of teaching styles and techniques in a variety of groupings – whole class, ability groups, mixed ability groups and paired working to stimulate students’ collaborative skills. Aside this, independent skills are also encouraged in all classes and IT is readily used and embedded across the whole curriculum. Below are further details about how we implement our curriculum by subject.

Literacy

We strongly place premium on literacy since it has a direct effect on progress in all areas of the curriculum and is crucial in developing a child's self-esteem, confidence and motivation to learn. Competence in reading is the key to independent learning and is given the highest priority by all our facilitators. In previous times we followed the letter and sound approach to teaching phonics, but have now transitioned to a more effective way of teaching phonics. A very highly structured, multi-sensory, incremental and code-oriented, instructional approach is used to teach our pre-schoolers to read and spell. The teacher delivers lessons that are clearly structured and easy to follow within a systematic, synthetic phonics program. It teaches all key elements of conceptual understanding, factual knowledge, and the three essential skills of blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation necessary for learning to read and spell. This is done on a daily basis until all children achieve the automaticity that underlies the fluency of every successful reader. We can guarantee that by the time your child leaves our kindergarten, he or she will be able to read a wide range of decodable and non-decodable books.

Numeracy

The way we teach numeracy is probably quite different from the way you learnt it at school. At Royal Diadem, we aim to produce confident mathematicians who enjoy tackling challenging problems. We do this through the use of concrete apparatus to support learning whenever a new concept is introduced. This then moves to pictorial representations and then to abstract representations. As much as possible, we do our best to give mathematical lessons a real-life context, thus putting them into actual life situations in order for our students to have varying ways to apply their learning.

Science

We teach science in a way that does not only make students acquire content knowledge but also lifelong skills in a meaningful way. Our students get the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding through first hand experiences, as well as using other resources such as books, charts, pictures and ICT to support their learning. They are encouraged to design and carry out their own investigations as well as communicate what they have found out to others in a variety of ways. Each science lesson helps students learn and develop different scientific skills such as exploration, investigation, observation, classification and research.

Arts

At RDS, the arts are a powerful and very individual communication tool for our pupils. Through artistic media, pupils express their understanding of the world around them and their own internal world. Individual responses and diversity are celebrated, as there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to create a piece of work. Through this pupils learn to gain confidence and a feeling of self-worth.

ICT

We use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enhance all areas of the curriculum. We believe ICT should be embraced as a vital part of modern life and it is important that our students are taught how to use appropriate hardware and software and - more importantly - how to use them safely. It is essential for students to have the confidence and ability to use these tools to prepare them for an ever-changing and rapidly developing world. With the help of our specialist facilitators, we aim to promote and build pupil’s skills and knowledge of ICT.

Religious & Moral Education

In Religious Education pupils learn about religious origins, beliefs and practices. Students study three main religions: Christianity, Islam and African Traditional Religion focusing on their beliefs, practices, symbols, artefacts, and places of worship, festivals and celebrations. Learning and teaching of religion aims to develop the religious literacy of students to enable them to participate critically and effectively in the life of their faith communities and the wider society and also appreciate and tolerate other religions.

Social Studies, History & Our World and Our People The Social Sciences

'Humans are social beings, and we are happier and better, when connected to others' - Paul Bloom.
We learn about people, their history, culture, languages and our immediate and distant environment through the social sciences. This helps our students better understand others, their environment and how these relationships affect them. Our social science lessons are delivered in a very stimulating environment using information technology. We also embark on excursions to various historical places to give meaning to what is taught in the class. By the time your child leaves Royal Diadem, you can be sure that he or she will appreciate the culture and history of other people, be open minded, appreciate the effect of human activities on his environment, and be able to fit into any society of human beings.
